CAD (coronary artery disease) occurs because of
severe blockage of arteries with plaque which doesn’t allow blood to flow. This
blockage might put your heart at risk and cause an attack or mild chest pain.
Depending on the state of the blockage in your artery, your cardiologist might
recommend angioplasty or stenting to open these clogged arteries. Here are four
things you should know about these procedures:-
- Interventional cardiology is performed with the help of catheter based procedures and X-rays to diagnose and treat the heart disease. Catheters are basically narrow, flexible, soft plastic tubes required for minimal surgical procedures.
- Angioplasty can help you survive during a heart attack. During the attack, arteries get totally blocked and oxygen-rich blood fails to reach the heart. In a short span of time, heart muscles get affected largely, causing permanent heart damage. There will be certain symptoms that indicate occurrence of an attack – chest discomfort, uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, shooting pain in both arms, back, neck and jaw, shortness of breath and nausea or light-headedness.
- Angioplasty can save you from a heart attack but it’s not the end to the disease. To lower your chances of any other blocked artery, you will have to take care of your diet and start exercising for at least for 45 minutes on a daily basis. Stress and smoking should be totally deleted from daily regime.
- Some patients often turn their course towards medication than going for a proper surgery. However stenting and angioplasty surgery are integral and advised if the symptoms start surfacing and hamper your daily life, medication stops affecting and other procedures fail to improvise the situation.
